My time in Iceland was amazing. Brooke and I did so much with our families. However, we both agreed that the most fantastic place we went was Langjökull, the "Long Glacier." Langjökull is the second-largest glacier in Iceland. Our guide drove us up the glacier to a spot where we could safely explore; he had a really cool unit on his jeep that shows him the safe places to drive.
Langjökull was so awesome! It was much colder on the glacier than in the other parts of Iceland that we visited, which makes sense! Glaciers are basically rivers of ice. They are endangered due to the warming of the planet, so I am glad I got to visit one. By the time I'm an adult, they will be much smaller or even gone! There were small streams of water all over the place; the water was so, so cold.
Brooke was very brave and leaned over one of the little icy rivulets to try a handful of glacial water. She's so brave! I was really impressed. I was afraid I'd fall in, so I didn't try. Now that I'm back in New York City, I'm regretting my decision a bit! Brooke said it was startlingly cold, but also very fresh. Yum!
I was in love with Langjökull. I'm so glad I dressed warmly with hiking boots! It felt like a magical place. Brooke said she thought Queen Elsa (from Frozen) would be right at home. The landscape was so enchanting. I felt like I was in a Björk song!
Here's Brooke with a big pile of volcanic ash! Whoa! In 2010, one of Iceland's volcanoes, Eyjafjallajökull, erupted. It left piles of ash all over Iceland. In fact, there was so much ash in the sky that airplanes couldn't fly between Europe and North America! Iceland is such a cool place- it's full of waterfalls, volcanoes, hot springs, and glaciers. Can you imagine what it would be like to grow up in such a marvelous place?
I was amazed by everything in Iceland. It seemed like each sight was more impressive and beautiful than the previous one. I'm so, so happy that Brooke's family invited my family to join them!
