We aren’t exactly going from brown eyes to blue….. but bluish gray eyes to blue…I just needed a catchy title for my post today! :o)
I thought I’d show you how to change the eyes in your ball jointed dolls (bjd’s) and help you get over the fear of doing it. It’s quite simple like those books were yesterday.
You only need a few things… eyeballs… glass ones are the prettiest, but they are also the most expensive. You can get acrylic ones that will work well but they won’t glisten and sparkle quite like the glass ones do.
I have several pair and store them in a snap compartment container… and keep it with my wigs…
You’ll also need something to hold the eyes in place… Mack’s Ear Plugs is what was recommended to me when I first got Nyssa and I’ve never used anything else… You can buy it at Walmart. It’s actually silicone for ears but it works great at holding in the eyes.
You’ll also need a towel or some soft fabric… so you don’t drop your eyes and also you’ll have your doll face down part of the time and you don’t want to put any shine marks on her face.
You’ll also want to be very careful when handling her face… I try to only hold onto her ears and not touch her face… it’s too easy to scratch her faceup with your fingernails or the oil from your hands can make her shiny. Some people were gloves… but I just try to handle her with loving care.
There are lots of ways that bjd’s heads open up to reveal the place for the eyes… Nyssa’s head happens to pop off like this…
The crown part of her head is held on with tiny magnets…
It will look something like this when you look in the head… I usually can get by with one plug of silicone, but if you need more, that’s completely fine.
The Mack’s holds the eyes in the correct position… Some people take their dolls head off to make it a little easier to get the eyes in… not me… I can do it just fine… it just takes slightly more time… Now you have an eyeless doll…
I decided to try a pair of darker blue glass eyes for this tutorial…
I sat the eyes in the sockets and started getting some globs of Mack’s ready to fill in around the eyes. These are glass eyes and have a little stem which makes it easier to fiddle with the eyes inside the head…
Now it’s just a matter of putting the Mack’s in around the eyes however you like… some people make like a little donut and put it around the eye before it’s even placed in the head… some people put the eye in and cover it with a big glob of the silicone… I tend to use small pieces and fill it in where necessary, constantly checking to see if the eye is looking in the right direction. The eyes need to be tilted slightly upward, with just a little bit of white showing at the bottom. Keeps your dolls from having that “deer in the headlights” look. (Thank you again Marsha for that reminder!)
Just use your finger to keep turning and moving the eyes until you think you have it right… make sure when you tip your doll up her eyes stay where you intended them to be…
