Coach D's Hair

Coach D's hair originally had only one spiral curl on the side in the front.  The rest was straight as shown in this photo from the back.

I wanted my Coach D doll to have more curl to the back of her hair like the real Coach D.  Two techniques were used in an attempt to accomplish this goal.

Technique #1

As I Am Coil Defining Jelly was used as part of the initial technique to add curl or a wave pattern to Coach D's hair.

I applied a small amount of As I Am Coil Defining Jelly to Coach D's hair before twisting several sections.  Rubber bands were added to the ends to hold the twisted strands together.  After 24 hours, I removed the rubber bands and the twists.  The curl was minimal but more disappointing was the gummy feeling to the hair (which is why I don't use this stuff on my hair -- such a waste of my money).  I rinsed the hair and moved on to the next technique.

Technique #2

After rinsing out the As I Am Coil Defining Jelly, Uli Conditioning Foam Wrap/Setting Lotion was applied generously.  Any mousse or light-hold setting lotion should work.  Strands of the hair were twisted into Bantu knots and held in place with hair pins as shown next.

I left the original spiral curl intact.  A hair clip held her original spiral curl and the plastic bag in place/out of the way as I worked on the hair. 

Before the hair was rinsed or twisted into Bantu knots, I removed Coach D's arms from her tank top and pulled the top down to her waist.  A plastic bag was placed around her body to protect it from any moisture. 

After pulling down Coach D's tank top, I discovered one more point of articulation that I had not documented in my previous post about this doll.  As shown next, she is articulated underneath her breast area.

The End Result

The Bantu knots were left in for 24 hours before taking each down.  Coach D's hair is now "bouncing and behaving" as illustrated in the final four pictures below.

When compared to the way it was before, the hair now has the right combination of curls and body throughout.
