Struggling toy retailer Toys R Us has listed the stores planned for closure following confirmation yesterday it was to shut one third of its UK operations.
At least 26 of Toys R Us’ permanent UK stores will close from spring 2018 as it now seeks a CVA in order to help pay off the retailer’s debt.
The toy giant made the decision to close up its loss-making stores, a list of larger, out-of-town shopping locations in favour of its smaller, more interactive stores.
Toys R Us detailed a list of stores earmarked for closure yesterday:
Aberdeen, Basingstoke, Belfast, Newtonabbey, Birmingham St. Andrews, Bolton, Bradford, Brislington (Bristol), Cambridge, Cardiff, Derry City, Doncaster, East Kilbride (South Lanarkshire), Exeter, Hayes (Middlesex), Kirkcaldy (Fife), Leicester, Livingston (West Lothian), Old Kent Road (south London), Plymouth, Scunthorpe, Shrewsbury, Tamworth (Staffordshire), Tunbridge Wells, Watford, York and Manchester Central Retail Park.
The UK business has been struggling for the same reasons as its US parent, having seen shoppers shun the large out-of-town sheds for shopping online.
Toys R Us has been loss-making for seven out of the past eight years, with the most recent accounts filed at Companies House, showing an operating loss of £500,000 on sales of £418m in the year to January.
800 jobs are now on the line.
