A morning in Canterbury

Canterbury, Kent

After Brooke and I disembarked from the Disney Magic with our families, it was time for a short visit to Canterbury.  Canterbury is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Kent, which is famous because it is very, very old.  I was primarily excited to see the cathedral there!

Our guide parked near a beautiful little river and we walked to the cathedral area. Brooke really liked how this street looked; I had to agree with her! Isn't the red door cheerful?

When we got to the area near the cathedral, the grounds weren't open yet- so we wandered around a little. Here we are in front of St. Thomas' Catholic Church, which was built in the 1870s.

St. Thomas' had very pretty flowers in its little garden. Of course, they were not nearly as fancy as the ones at Dunrobin Castle, but they were just what we needed to see on a grey and drizzly day.

We wandered a little bit more and found lots of cute shops.  There was even a cute little shop that sold American snacks like Twinkies! Brooke got me a little present at a small gift shop, which she said she would give to me later. Isn't she sweet?

Brooke found this nice road sign on Canterbury Lane. It was right across from a public toilet, though that wouldn't have made for a nice photo!

Finally! It was time to look around the grounds of the cathedral. Here I am there! I didn't go into the cathedral because there was a service happening and I didn't want to be disrespectful. Still, everything I saw was very beautiful and very old.  The cathedral was founded in the 500s CE, but was rebuilt in the 1070s. Holy hotdogs, that's old!

Eurostar

We spent a little bit of time in the cathedral's gift shop and then made our way to the train station, where we caught a train to London. Before we knew it, Brooke and I were off on our next adventure!

Even though we were only in Canterbury for a short time, I'm glad we had the opportunity to visit.  I loved seeing how the ancient cathedral stood so close to modern stores like Whole Foods! Have you ever been to an ancient place?
